Environmental culture park
The UmweltKulturPark in Dortmund-Barop covers an area of around 12 hectares southwest of Ostenbergstrasse in the Groß Barop district.
The initiative to set it up came from the city of Dortmund and the Permaculture Association, which was founded at the time . The city of Dortmund has made the site available for a symbolic lease. In autumn 1988, the first planting work and the creation of paths began.
Today, the maintenance of the park is guaranteed by the Permaculture Association and the Green Space Office of the City of Dortmund in cooperation with many environmental initiatives and associations.
The kitchen gardens and publicly accessible areas of the park have been laid out according to the principles of permaculture . They contain elements such as orchards , herb spirals , dry stone walls and so-called sun traps (horseshoe-shaped hedges that are open to the south and resemble the edge of a forest in their structure ).
