Un franc vermillon is the name of philatelists for the postage stamp for a franc in cinnabar color of the French Cérès postage stamp issue . Together with vingt centimes noir , it was issued on January 1, 1849 . This makes them the first postage stamps to be issued by France.

The earliest known date of use of the un franc vermillon is January 2, 1849 . Two of these letters from Paris are known. Accordingly, there are no first days of use .

The un franc vermilion was to light reddish tinted stamp paper in printing produced. There was no perforation . Due to a likelihood of confusion with the little later issued stock to 40 centimes in a red-orange color output was the un franc vermillon soon by a postage stamp same value in karminer replaced color.
