history

In the middle of the 19th century, a seaside resort for summer visitors from Munich was built in Starnberg in the immediate vicinity of the city center and the train station . In the following decades it developed into a facility for over 500 guests. In 1905, the Undosa wave pool was built next to the seaside resort, with the aim of offering visitors a new attraction with a wave machine that was previously unknown .

The basin of the Undosa was built into the lake and extended to a size of 60 × 15 meters. At the top of the system was the machine hall, the roof of which served as a sun terrace. Large pontoons were raised with steam power , which alternately pressed on the surface of the water. The displacement of the water created artificial waves. In order to reinforce the illusion of a maritime bath, sand was brought in from the Main and an artificial beach was built on which beach chairs were placed. At the southern edge of the pool there was a 10 meter high diving platform .

High admission prices guaranteed the pool's exclusivity. In 1908, a wave pool with laundry cost 60 pfennigs (around € 3.61). 20 Pfennig (approx. € 1.20) were even to be paid for entering the grandstand. Children were only allowed to enter in the early afternoon when only a few adults were in the bathroom. Initially, there were separate bathing times for men and women. Family bathing times were only introduced later.

High repair costs led to the shutdown and demolition of the wave machine in 1921. The lakeside restaurant housed in the bathroom was expanded to include a large ballroom in 1925. After several renovations, the Undosa was closed in 1978 and demolished in 1981 due to dilapidation. Today there is only the restaurant business.
