The palace consists of three building complexes: the Noandang (노안당), the Norakdang (노 락당) and the Irodang (아로 당). Noandang and Norakdang were built in their current form in 1864, Irodang in 1869. There is also a building called Sujiksa (수직 사) in which the guards of the palace were located. Earlier gates for easier connection with the adjacent Changdeokgung Palace, Gyeonggeunmun (경근 문) and Gonggeunmun (공근 문) no longer exist.

The Noandang building is a T-shaped building for the male residents; King Gojong lived here before he could ascend the throne of legal age. Regent Heungseon directed the affairs of state from here. The building has the typical Korean Ondol floor heating and a balcony called Yeonghawru (영 하루).

The Norakdang building is centrally located in the palace complex. In this building, also equipped with an Ondol heater, Gojong married Queen Myeongseong (* 1851) in 1866.

The Irodang building is rectangular and lies behind Noandang and Norakdang. Behind this building is Yeongnodang, the home of Kim Seung-hyeon (Treasure No. 19).

The palace is open all year round and, in addition to the palace complex, has an exhibition hall in which artifacts from the time of King Gojong and Regent Heungseon are shown.
