Unia is the largest trade union in Switzerland. It is cross-sector and organizes employees in industry, trade, construction and the private service sector. Unia represents the interests of all employees and offers its members advice, legal protection and other services. Unia also runs the largest unemployment insurance fund in Switzerland.

Unia wants to change the balance of power within the world of work in favor of employees. Over 200,000 employees are united in Unia. Unia has concluded around 300 collective employment contracts, from which over a million employees benefit. Unia is also active on a political level and is committed to a social and just society. Unia has already taken part in various initiatives and voting campaigns. Unia is also actively involved in several demonstrations and rallies.

history

Unia was created on October 16, 2004 from the merger of the construction and industry trade unions (GBI), Switzerland. Metal and Watch Workers Association (SMUV), Sales Trade Transport Food (VHTL), the old (active in the service sector) unia and the Geneva trade union in the tertiary sector actions . It is affiliated with the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions (SGB), the largest Swiss umbrella organization for trade unions.

structure

Unia is legally organized as an association. The governing bodies are the central board and the management. Since June 20, 2015, Vania Alleva has been the first woman to lead Unia as sole president. Vice-presidents are Aldo Ferrari and Martin Tanner. The more than 200,000 members are registered in 14 regions with 45 sections and around 110 local secretariats and, depending on their occupation, belong to the four sectors of construction, trade, industry and the tertiary sector . There are also four interest groups: youth, women, migration and pensioners.

The independently organized Unia unemployment fund has 68 larger and smaller paying offices across Switzerland, through which around 1.2 billion francs were paid out from the federal unemployment insurance in 2015.

Unia also publishes a membership newspaper in German (“work”), French (“Evènement syndical”) and Italian (“area”). They are supplemented seven times a year by the “Horizonte” magazine in Spanish, Portuguese, Serbian, Albanian and Turkish.

Finances

The main source of income for Unia is the membership fees. In the Unia newspaper work on April 27, 2012, there was talk of the "greatest source of income".
