Union Stud Merten

The Union stud in Merten near Eitorf was used for the rearing and boarding of thoroughbred horses . It was founded in 1960 by the Union Club .

Union Club

The Union Club was founded in Berlin in 1867 to set up a thoroughbred breed in Germany. Members were breeders and riders of the entire German Empire , Otto von Bismarck was also a member.

The Union Club owned the Grunewald and Hoppegarten racetracks , training tracks, an administration building in Berlin-Mitte, the Neuenhagen manor , a horse clinic and the Union stud .

In 1934 the Grunewald racetrack was expropriated to build the Olympic stadium here.

After the assassination attempt on Hitler in 1944 , a dozen of the 500 members of the Union Club were also brought to justice and executed. Many others also lost their lives in the resistance against National Socialism.

The remaining possessions of the Union Club were on the territory of the Soviet occupation zone and were later expropriated by the Communists.

Union Stud Merten

In 1960 the remaining members of the Union Club got together and founded the Union Stud in Eitorf-Merten. It is located in the Siegaue below Merten Castle . In 1995 Christoph Berglar took over the stud from the Union Club. From 2011 to 2017 the Union-Gestüt was owned by Stall 5-Stars.

For the thoroughbreds, 65 hectares of land, 60 horse boxes and a horse walker were available.
