from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Unite is an English gold coin worth 20 shillings = 1 pound.

It was minted or struck in the Tower of London between 1604 and 1619 under the reign of King James I. The weight is approx. 9 grams and it has a fineness of 916.6 / 1000 (22 carats ).

Since James I was also King of Scotland , the Unite was also minted there. The writing FACIAM EOS IN GENTEM UNAM (I will make them one people) indicates the desired unification of the two kingdoms, which was only accomplished under Queen Anne in 1707. The obverse of the coin shows a four-part coat of arms, the reverse shows the bust of King James, who is holding the orb and a scepter .

In 1619 the Unite was briefly replaced by the Laurel , until it was minted again from 1625 to 1662 under the kings Karl I and Karl II . In 1663 it was finally replaced by the guinea .
