The United National Front ( UNF , Sinhala එක්සත් ජාතික පෙරමුණ , Tamil ஐக்கிய தேசிய முன்னணி , "United National Front") was an alliance of parties in Sri Lanka , led by the United National Party (UNF), which existed from 2001 to about 2010th Politically, most of the UNF's parties belonged to the conservative-liberal spectrum, but there were also smaller interest parties among them.

history

The UNF was founded in the run-up to the 2001 parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka . The aim of the foundation was to pool the forces of the opposition parties under the leadership of the UNP against the government led by the People's Alliance .

At the time of its establishment, the UNF consisted of the following parties:

In the 2001 parliamentary election, the UNF was able to record significant gains in votes and mandates, and its top candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe became Prime Minister. However, the UNF just missed an absolute majority. In 2004 there were early elections , which were won by the newly formed left-wing United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), which also subsequently provided the government. The 2005 and 2010 presidential elections were also won by the UPFA candidate, Mahinda Rajapaksa . The 2010 parliamentary election was also lost for the UNF. During these years, some founding parties left the UNF and joined the UPFA, such as the CWC and the UCPF on August 25, 2006 and the SLMC on November 22, 2010 after the 2010 general election. The UNF had practically dissolved. However, there was no formal resolution to dissolve.

The successor to the UNF is the United National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG) , which was founded shortly before the 2015 general election under the leadership of the UNP .
