United Nations Plaza (building)
United Nations Plaza - also abbreviated as UN Plaza or UN Plaza - is a building complex including skyscrapers directly opposite the General Assembly of the UN headquarters . It stands between United Nations Plaza (extension of East 44th Street) and East 45th Street and borders First Avenue to the east.
The building, designed by architects Kevin Roche , John Dinkeloo and Associates , was built from 1969 to 1976 to provide office space for public corporations and, among other things, for the increased office needs of the United Nations , based on joint efforts by the United Nations, the City of New York and the State of New York to accomplish. The building complex consists of three buildings: In two 40-story towers, which stand on a common building base, offices, conference rooms, a hotel, a restaurant and apartments are housed. A third, 15-story structure was built for UNICEF's headquarters in New York.
Not only because of their size, the two towers in particular stand out visually: they are characterized at great heights by the combination of sections with vertical and those with sloping glass facades, which, in addition to their asymmetrical floor plan, leads to a unique, idiosyncratic image.
The UN Secretariat is currently being completely renovated for the first time since it was built. The work should be completed in 2013 and also make the building environmentally friendly. The cost is estimated at $ 1 billion.
