United States Antarctic Program

Founded in 1959, the United States Antarctic Program or USAP for short (formerly known as the United States Antarctic Research Program or USARP and United States Antarctic Service or USAS ) is an organization of the US government and has a presence in the Antarctic . She coordinates research and support for research in the region. The goals of the organization are

"[...] the expansion of fundamental knowledge about the region, the promotion of research on global and regional issues of current scientific importance and the use of the region as a basis from which to support research."

The US Antarctic Program, established by the Polar Program Office of the National Science Foundation , only supports research programs that can only, or best, be undertaken in Antarctica.

The USAP currently has three year-round research stations in Antarctica ( McMurdo Station , Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, and Palmer Station ), as well as numerous seasonal field camps. In addition, the USAP maintains research vessels that navigate Antarctic waters.

The agency is based in Arlington, Virginia .
