The United States Office of Personnel Management ( OPM ; German Office of Personnel Management of the United States ) is one of the independent authorities of the United States . The task of the OPM is to manage the staff of the federal authorities.

The forerunner was the United States Civil Service Commission , founded in 1883. With the 1978 law on the reform of the civil service, the OPM came into being on January 1, 1979.

In 1996 the security clearance department was spun off and privatized as USIS.

The OPME is u. a. responsible for appointments lists in US administrative law .

After two successful cyber attacks on the agency, the agency chief Katherine Archuleta resigned.
