A universal connection unit ( UAE ) is a terminal device connection box according to the RJ standard . UAE are used for analog and digital communication terminals such as telephones and ISDN cards . UAE have one or two RJ sockets , suitable for RJ48 plugs (also called RJ45 , Western plugs or modular jack ); RJ11 and RJ14 plugs can also be plugged in. In the case of UAE with two sockets, these are either connected separately or in parallel. The contact positions of the sockets can be completely equipped with eight or only four contacts (the inner four positions).

The designation of UAE depends on the number of sockets, how they are equipped with contacts and the type of socket connection.

UAE designation Number of sockets Socket circuit Contacts per socket
UAE 8 (4) 1 - 4th
UAE 8 (8) 1 - 8th
UAE 2 × 8 (4) 2 parallel 4th
UAE 2 × 8 (8) 2 parallel 8th
UAE 8/8 (4) 2 Cut 4th
UAE 8/8 (8) 2 Cut 8th

A distinction is also made between the surface-mounted version (AP) for mounting on the wall and the flush-mounted version (UP) for installation in flush-mounted boxes or cable duct systems.

Further connection units in communication technology are ISDN connection units and telecommunications connection units ( TAE ).
