The Universal Polar Stereographic Projection is a conformal and stereographic projection that is used in the UTM coordinate system to represent the polar regions . On the one hand, it is intended to prevent excessive distortions in the vicinity of the north and south poles, and on the other hand to avoid their “fragmentation” into several strips of the UTM cylinder projection .

The poles are each projected onto a circle. This is aligned in a Cartesian coordinate system so that the center point is at the coordinates (2,000,000 m / 2,000,000 m). The UTM system specifies that in the UPS projection the latitudes 84 ° N to 90 ° N are used for the north pole and the latitude 80 ° S to 90 ° S for the south pole. This difference of four degrees results in that the circular projections of the north and south poles have a different radius.
