The Yamagata University ( Japanese 山形 大学 , Yamagata daigaku , short: Yamadai ( 山大 )) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is located in Kojirakawa-machi, Yamagata , Yamagata Prefecture .

history

The university was founded in 1949 through the merger of the following schools (4 state and 1 prefectural):

  • the Yamagata High School ( 山形 高等学校 , Yamagata kōtō gakkō , founded in 1920),
  • the normal school Yamagata ( 山形 師範学校 , Yamagata shihan gakkō , founded in 1878),
  • the youth normal school Yamagata ( 山形 青年 師範学校 , Yamagata his shihan gakkō , founded 1922),
  • the Yonezawa Technical Center ( 米 沢 工業 専 門 学校 , Yonezawa kōgyō semmon gakkō , founded in 1910), and
  • the Yamagata Prefectural School of Agriculture and Forestry ( 山形 県 立 農林 専 門 学校 , Yamagata-kenritsu nōrin semmon gakkō , in Tsuruoka , founded in 1947).

The five locations were initially retained. The three of them (Kojirakawa, Yonezawa and Tsuruoka) are still going on today. The museum on the Yonezawa campus is the former main building of the Yonezawa Technical Center, built in 1910 (the current building of the Yonezawa train station was designed after the model of the school building). The Faculty of Education had two locations (in Midori-chō and Hirashimizu, Yamagata) and moved to the Kojirakawa campus (the former location of Yamagata High School) in 1963. In the former campus of the Faculty of Education (Midori-chō) there is the Yamagata Prefectural Branch Museum of Educational History ( 山形 県 立 博物館 分 館 教育 資料 館 , the former main building of the Yamagata Normal School, built in 1901; 38 ° 15 ′ 15.7 ″  N , 140 ° 20 '53.4 "  O ).

In 2005, the Faculty of Education became the Faculty of Regional Education and Culture (Japanese 地域 教育 文化 学部 , English Faculty of Education, Art and Science ).
