On behalf of Duke Karl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach , Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had an observatory set up in the urban area of Jena. 90 cm Schmidt telescope near Großschwabhausen

Since 1962 the Astrophysical Institute has been operating a branch in the village of Großschwabhausen, about 10 km west of the city . The observation station located in the forest on the plateau offers at least bearable conditions for optical astronomy for Central European conditions, which are no longer available in the city due to light pollution . The largest telescope is a reflector telescope with a main mirror diameter of 90 cm, which can be converted into a Schmidt camera with an aperture of 60 cm. CCD cameras, fiber optic spectrometers and photon counting cameras can be connected to this. Since 2006 a nightly observation has been carried out again.
