The Vilnius University Library (lit. Vilniaus universiteto biblioteka , VUB ) is the oldest academic library in Lithuania . It was founded by Jesuits in 1570 , making it nine years older than Vilnius University . The library now has around 5.4 million media units on shelves over 166 kilometers. 28,420 registered readers are looked after by 195 employees. The library is visited by over 10,000 tourists annually.

history

At the request of the Archbishop of Vilna, Walerian Protasewicz (1505–1579), Jesuits came to Vilnius in 1569 and founded a Jesuit college with an attached library on July 17, 1570 with financial support from the archbishopric .

Facilities

Information center for humanistics

The Information Center for Humanistics ( Humanistikos informacijos centras (HIC) ) and the reading room for Lituanistik were newly established and opened on September 7, 2007 . The HIC has 32 workstations, 27 of which are equipped with computers. These are located in four reading rooms: Silver room for magazines, modern literature (media library); Orange reading room a room for group work; Nut reading room the IT laboratory; and the Green Hall - a reading room for periodicals.

Reading rooms

The magnificent hall of the library is the former refectory on the library's ground floor.

Center for Science Communication

The Center for Science Communication ( Mokslinės komunikacijos ir informacijos centras, MKIC ) opened in 2013.
