The Putra University Malaysia (UPM) (Mal. Universiti Putra Malaysia, English Putra University Malaysia) in Serdang in the state of Selangor is a 1931 founded state university in Malaysia . The university specializes in agricultural sciences and related subjects and is named after Abdul Rahman Putra , Malaysia's first Prime Minister.

history

In 1931 the School of Agriculture was established by the British colonial administration. The school offered two training courses for public sector employees: a three-year course with a diploma and a one-year course with a certificate as a degree. In 1941 the school had around 320 students. The upgrading to college took place in 1947 as College of Agriculture Malaya and the following year it was intended to convert the college into a university. The unrest from 1948 onwards prevented this. In 1960 the Faculty of Agriculture of the Malaya University was established. Due to the increasing importance of agriculture, the College of Agriculture Malaya and the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Malaya merged in 1971 and the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia emerged as an independent university. In 1973, teaching began with 1,500 students in three faculties . From the 1990s, teaching was expanded to include other areas of science. The name was changed to its current name in 1997 in memory of the first Prime Minister of Malaysia.
