The University of Nigeria, located in Nsukka in the state of Enugu in southeastern Nigeria, was the country's first university founded and run by local people. It is the second oldest university in the country after the University of Ibadan .
history
A law establishing a university in the eastern region of Nigeria was passed in 1955. The then premier of the eastern region and later state president Nnamdi Azikiwe was particularly committed to the university . The university opened on October 7, 1960, at the height of the country's independence celebrations. Princess Alexandra of Kent on behalf of Queen Elizabeth laid the foundation stone. Operations began on October 17, 1960 with 220 students and 13 members of the academic staff.
During the Biafra war , the campus was destroyed and bombed.
In 1995/96 the university had 20,747 students and 1,213 employees. According to its own information, the UNN has 36,000 students, according to a government commission in 2012 there are 23,815 students.
