Nsukka is a city and Local Government Area in the state of Enugu in southeastern Nigeria . According to calculations in 2012, the city has 41,282 inhabitants and is located north of the city of Enugu in the Udi Hills at an altitude of 396 meters. Most of the residents belong to the Igbo ethnic group . In Nsukka, Nigeria's first university founded and run by local people, the University of Nigeria , was founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe , the country's first president.
Nsukka was in the area of the state of Biafra , which existed from 1967 to 1970. In July 1967, the city was one of the first to be recaptured by the Nigerian troops in the Biafran War of Independence against the Nigerian central state.
The writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie grew up in Nsukka, and in several of her books and stories Nsukka appears as a place of action.
