The United Deccan States were an amalgamation of 16 princely states of the Kolhapur and Deccan States Agency, which was formed after Great Britain decided on July 18, 1947 to give India and Pakistan independence (see History of India ). These states were Akalkot , Aundh , Bhor , Jamkhandi , Jath , Kuraundvad Senior and Junior , Miraj Senior and Junior , Mudhol , Phaltan , Ramdurg , Sangli , Savantvadi , Savanur and Wadi . Together they had an area of 28,153 square kilometers. Kolhapur stayed away from the Federation.

On February 5, 1948, the United Deccan States were annexed to the state of Bombay (Kolhapur followed on March 1, 1949). The southern part of their territories came to the state of Mysore (renamed Karnataka in 1973 ) by the States Reorganization Act in 1956 , the rest remained with Bombay, from which the state of Maharashtra emerged in 1960 .
