Ramdurg was a princely state of British India on the Deccan Plateau in what is now the state of Karnataka . Its capital was Ramdurg in what is now the Belgaum district .

With an area of 438 square kilometers and 37,848 inhabitants (1901) Ramdurg was one of the smaller princely states. It was on the banks of the Malprabha River between the Bijapur , Dharwad and Belgaum districts of the Bombay province and an exclave belonging to Kolhapur .

Ramdurg was ruled by a Brahmin Marathan dynasty. The rulers carried the title Sachiv , from 1907 Meherban Raja Shri . The ancestors of the ruling dynasty of Ramdurg had both fortresses Ramdurg and Nargund from the Peshwas assigned as fiefs after the area was conquered by the Marath ruler Shivaji in the 17th century . Between 1778 and 1799 Ramdurg was occupied by Tipu Sultan of Mysore . After the end of the Third Marath War (1817-1818) Ramdurg became a British protectorate . After Indian independence in 1947, Ramdurg merged with 15 other princely states to form the United Deccan States , which were incorporated into the state of Bombay on February 5, 1948. Through the States Reorganization Act , the area of Ramdurg came to the state of Mysore in 1956 (renamed Karnataka in 1973 ).
