The University of Sulaimani (UOS; Kurdish زانکۆی سلێمانی Zankoy Slêmanî , German: University of Sulaimaniya) is a university in the Kurdish cultural capital Sulaimaniyya ( Slêmanî ) in the autonomous region of Kurdistan . With around 24,500 students at around 8 faculties and 2 colleges , it is one of the largest universities in Kurdistan.

University of Sulaimani

The university was founded in 1968 as the oldest university in the Kurdish region of Iraq, initially with three faculties. In 1981, by order of the Iraqi government, it was relocated to Erbil and renamed " Salahaddin University ". The background to this was the planned suppression of the very strong Kurdish resistance in the city against Saddam Hussein . After the Iraqi army was driven out of Sulaimaniyya, the city's university was rebuilt on November 14, 1992. The university moved to Erbil remained as Salahaddin University.

The University of Sulaimani is considered the mother university of all Kurdish universities and therefore has its own significance in the wider region.

In the 2009/2010 academic year, 24,488 students were enrolled at the university. In 2007, 45% of the 15,000 students at the time were women.
