Andrew Garrett (born April 9, 1823 in Albany , New York , † November 1, 1887 on Huahine ) was an American naturalist and illustrator with a focus on malacology and ichthyology . In these areas, Garrett was the first to describe newly discovered species.

Life

As a young man, Garrett worked as a seaman. 1842-1846 he traveled to various states in the USA. In his spare time he researched plants and shells. As a crew member on whaling ships, he sailed the Pacific from 1846 and reached Honolulu . When he returned to the United States in 1851, he brought back a collection of seashells that he had gathered on his trip. In 1852 Garrett went back to Honolulu and the island of Hawaii , where he stayed until 1863.

During his stay in Hawaii, Garrett met American malacologists Wesley Newcomb and William Harper Pease . He produced illustrations for scientific work by Pease. From 1855 Garrett was in contact with the Harvard professor Louis Agassiz and his environment. He offered his services as a collector and descriptor of newly discovered species and sent drawings and collected specimens.

1866 was a connection from Garrett with the Museum Godeffroy materialize and he was working for the Museum as a researcher and collector. Garrett made around 470 drawings for the multi-part publication Andrew Garrett's Fish of the South Seas . The descriptions were written by Albert Günther , who also edited the work. It was published in the Journal of the Museum Godeffroy .

Garrett toured various islands in the Pacific Ocean , including the Cook Islands and Western Samoa . In 1870 he settled on Huahine and lived there until his death in 1887. Garrett left an extensive collection of shells with more than thirty thousand specimens of over eight thousand species.
