Herbert Weidner

Herbert Albrecht Weidner (born May 9, 1911 in Hof an der Saale , † May 18, 2009 ibid) was a German entomologist .

Life

Herbert Weidner was born in 1911 in Hof an der Saale, the son of town treasurer Albrecht Weidner and his wife Marie, née Klug. He grew up in Hof and attended the humanistic grammar school there , where he graduated from high school in 1930 . He then studied biology , chemistry and geography at the universities in Munich , Erlangen and Halle . In 1933 he did his doctorate under Berthold Klatt , who went from Halle to Hamburg in 1934. In the same year Klatt made Weidner a scientific assistant at the Zoological Museum and Institute of Hamburg University . In 1938 Herbert Weidner was appointed research assistant . In the year of his appointment, Weidner married the biologist Dr. Erna Rauh. In 1942 he became curator . Herbert Weidner was in charge of the so-called pest department and some areas of the entomological collections in the museum, succeeding Ludwig Reh. In 1941 Weidner was drafted into the Wehrmacht . In 1945 he became a prisoner of war in Yugoslavia . In 1948 Herbert Weidner returned to Hamburg and resumed his work as curator at the University of Hamburg . In 1950 Herbert Weidner received his habilitation . He received the Venia Legendi for the subject zoology . Weidner retired in 1976 .

Scientific work

Weidner's scientific work is reflected in hundreds of publications .

Research on insects in the human cultural field as well as work on the systematics and faunistics of grasshoppers and termites formed the focus of his work, whereby he also considered cultural-historical aspects of his subject. Herbert Weidner is considered a co-founder of urban ecology . He also dealt with the history of the natural sciences. Weidner described the development of entomology in Hamburg as well as the zoological collections in the Natural History Museum Hamburg .

Editing

Herbert Weidner published several magazines; including the ENTOMOLOGISCHE MITTEILUNGEN from the Zoological State Institute , which he founded in 1952, for 25 years . Zoological Museum Hamburg .

Honors

Weidner received numerous honors. In 1991 the German Society for General and Applied Entomology , which he had chaired for several years, made him an honorary member . He was awarded both the Karl Escherich Medal (1978) and the Fabricius Medal (1985).
