The North Upper Franconian Association for Nature, History and Regional Studies e. V. or short name association is an association whose aim, since its foundation in 1891, has been to bundle efforts in the specialist areas contained in the name. In addition to the city and district of Hof, the association's catchment area is the districts of Wunsiedel and Kronach .

history

The North Upper Franconian Association for Nature, History and Regional Studies was founded on October 5, 1891 in Hof by a "group of friends of nature who had set themselves the task of researching [...] [the Hof area] and [...] [its] history “, Founded and should serve the education of the middle class. The scientific orientation of the organization is also reflected in the initial 62 members, all of whom came from the upper class of the population and had professions in law , administration or school education . During the first years of the association, the number of members of this almost elitist society rose rapidly, which may not least be due to the fact that there had not been an association with such an orientation in the city of Hof. As early as 1906, with 171 members, the first high was recorded. Until 1945 women were not expressly forbidden to join the association, but the board of directors, which examined every membership application, was able to ensure that the men initially kept to themselves. From 1893 family evenings took place at regular intervals, to which the wives of the members were also invited.

Soon after the association was founded, the first lecture evenings took place, some of which were public, but whose audience was mostly limited to members. At first, the topics did not relate exclusively to the region , but rather served the general education of the members. The speakers mostly came from within their own ranks and were soon able to fall back on a purchased image projector . Since 1896, so-called "reports" with articles by members on various topics have been published regularly, and these have been exchanged with publications from other institutions. As a result, they soon had a sizeable club library, which was enriched by various donations and foundations, including plastic exhibits. According to Arnd Kluge, the current chairman of the association, the North Upper Franconian Association can be understood as a kind of social facility that has always been open to modern technological and scientific discoveries. The main aim was to entertain the members while making knowledge and education accessible to them. Examples are the installation of a seismograph and a refractor in 1908 and 1913. From this initiative of the association, the earthquake station and the observatory of the city of Hof were later created .

First problems

Soon after the membership peak in 1906, the numbers fell noticeably and fell to 61 in 1939. The association's own collection, which had now grown too large, was given to the city of Hof as a gift and a museum was founded. Kluge also sees the elitist attitude of the association as one of the main reasons for its dwindling attractiveness for new members, since the lecture evenings, which are always organized by internal speakers, dealt with the topics very quickly and there were hardly any new impulses from outside. In the meantime, there was also broad competition among organizations with similar goals in Hof, such as the Beautification, Art and Literary Associations. Although attempts were made to bundle the various activities, which, for example, led to the group of the family researcher association Roland being merged into the North Upper Franconian Association and the name, which had already been too long for many Hofers , was supplemented with the addition of family history , but the conditions of the heyday could cannot be reached again for the time being.

In addition to the lectures on the eponymous research areas, there were also changing focus topics. During the First World War, for example, the geology of the war or possible explosives were reported , and from 1917 topics such as war and the risk of epidemics or edible earth were dealt with . Even the time of the National Socialist dictatorship did not leave the association unaffected, which now dealt with family studies and the issue of living space, among other things. Although we saw in 1933 for the time being by a DC circuit of the managing committee and the restructuring of the association from, but it was considering in 1936 due to the continuing decline in membership for the first time resolution. After the club library had been handed over to the recently founded city archive , the club no longer had its own collections. A short time later, the synchronization was made up and the association was integrated into the Nazi cultural community Vortragsring . Three years later, when the war broke out, activities ceased for good.

New beginning after the Second World War

After the war, the association, which had not disbanded, was revived in 1949 by a group of old members. The number of members rose rapidly within a very short period of time and reached a new high of 292 in 1956. This now included more women. As in the membership structure, a change had also taken place in the activities: The lectures were no longer held by members alone, but more and more outside people came and presented local historical topics. Dialect evenings in North Bavarian and East Franconian as well as excursions were also on the program. The publications also dealt with these topics, whereby great emphasis was placed on cooperation with colleges and universities.

Despite the changed image of the association, the number of members stagnated again in the 1960s and the number of mostly elderly speakers declined. At the beginning of the 1970s, there were only three lecture evenings a year, which is why some saw the dissolution as the only logical conclusion. The long-time chairman Axel Herrmann, who took over this office in 1979, succeeded in initiating various new projects and ensuring the survival of the association. The association was entered in the register four years later; the goals were specified in terms of research and education.
