Universul ( German : Das Universum ) was Romania's first daily newspaper aimed at a broad readership .

The newspaper was founded on August 20, 1884 by the Italian journalist Luigi Cazzavillan . According to the self-description, it was independent and politically, it was structured according to modern journalistic principles and aimed at the common population. The language was deliberately simple, and it had “Briefly reported” sections. The newspaper sold up to 80,000 copies and became the market leader among the Romanian mass media.

In 1903 Cazzavillan's widow Theodora Cazzavillan took over the newspaper, in 1909 her new husband Dimitrescu Campina. From 1916 to 1943 Stelian Popescu was in charge.

Universul existed until 1953.
