history

The mall in the building

The original plan was that construction on Water Tower Place would begin in the late 1960s, but construction company Mafco, which was involved in the construction of Marshall Field , did not start construction until 1975.

The skyscraper of the area is 262 meters high and has 74 floors, construction elements were mostly reinforced concrete slabs. Currently, the tower of Water Tower Place is the ninth tallest building in Chicago . When it was completed in 1976, it was the tallest reinforced concrete building in the world and only lost its title in 1990 to 311 South Wacker Drive , 293 meters high , which is also in Chicago . The building maintains the award-winning Ritz-Carlton Hotel , luxury condominiums and office space. The main entrance to the building is on the west side just off the Magnificent Mile . In 2002 a large-scale renovation began on both parts of the building.

The opening of Water Tower Place changed the economic dynamism of the Magnificent Mile, it now became the center of expensive retail and housing. Thirty years after opening, the residences and apartments are one of the most prestigious addresses in Chicago and the surrounding area, and the shopping center is almost entirely let to large and small corporations. Over a hundred shops can be found in the entire building. Companies such as Adidas , Lacoste and Victoria's Secret are represented . The whole area covers one block and is thus the second largest shopping center in Chicago. One of the most famous residents of the building is Oprah Winfrey .

The building is owned by General Growth Properties .
