The structure is right next to the tallest building in the city, the Willis Tower . It was built in the postmodern style and completed in 1990. At 293 meters tall, it is the seventh tallest building in Chicago and the 20th tallest building in the United States . The skyscraper was also the tallest reinforced concrete building until 1992, but was then surpassed by the Central Plaza in Hong Kong. The building was named after its address at 311 South Wacker Drive .

The skyscraper is primarily used as an office building, but is also rented to private tenants. There is a subway station under the building . There is also a three-story parking deck in the basement of the high-rise building.

Some residents refer to the skyscraper as The White Castle Building as the top of the building resembles the logo of the White Castle fast food chain. Other nicknames for the building are The Wedding Cake Building or The Bart Simpson Building , also due to the shape of the roof.

lobby

The lobby is 26 meters high and is known as the “winter garden”. Since 2002 there are palm trees made of glass and a fountain. After entering the reception hall you will find yourself in front of a bronze sculpture by the artist Raymond Kaskey . It bears the name "Pearl of the Lakes" and shows Neptune sitting on a well filled with shells.

top, roof

On the roof of the building there is a cylinder with a diameter of 32 meters. This is surrounded by four smaller cylinders. The cylinders are illuminated very brightly with the aid of 1,852 fluorescent tubes, which is why they are among the most noticeable skyscrapers in Chicago at night. They also change color on public holidays or special occasions.

park

To the northwest, the skyscraper is surrounded by grass, the largest green space in the Chicago Loop . It is often used by the city's residents for picnics and relaxing in the warm summer months. In addition, agricultural markets as well as musical events and various art and cultural festivals take place on the site. The original intention was to build two more skyscrapers identical to the 311 South Wacker on the site. But this plan was rejected again.
