history

The Lower Castle in 1858

The castle and the associated manor were built in 1667 by order of Hans Joost II von Boyneburgk as a replacement for a moated castle that was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . It served the Lords of Boyneburgk as a residence for centuries until it was expropriated by the Soviet occupiers in 1945.

After the expropriation, refugees from eastern Germany were housed in the castle and the rooms were divided into several apartments. The castle still serves as a residential building with several residential units. It also houses the mayor's office and a local museum. A transfer back to the previous owner did not take place in the 1990s; the current owner is the city of Eisenach. At the end of 2015, the city put the building up for sale.

Architecture and equipment

The castle is a three-story, plastered half-timbered building with a crooked hip roof . At the southwest corner there is an octagonal tower with a pointed tower dome. It has partial basements as a barrel-vaulted cellar. Inside with a stone spiral staircase and depictions of coats of arms. On the first floor there is a representative hall with historical wall paintings and ceiling paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries.

“Dance under the linden tree” - excerpt from the mural in the ballroom

In 1755 the painter IE Schuchmann created a work of art of cultural and historical value in the palace hall. The walls of the hall were covered with wallpaper , which shows a panorama of the area around the castle. In addition to the representation of the view of the surroundings, including the view of the Wartburg , depictions of village life around 1755, such as the dance under the linden tree and contemporary hunting scenes have been preserved. The restoration of the work of art began in the 1990s and has not yet been completed (2017).

In the stairwell there are representations of historical noble coats of arms, some of which were removed in 1946 at the behest of the Russian occupiers. On their orders in 1946, the coat of arms of those of Boyneburgk was removed from the outer facade.

Large parts of the historic interior, including furniture from the 16th century and a valuable porcelain collection, were lost after the castle was expropriated.

Castle courtyard

Castle courtyard with a fountain

A Rococo-style fountain was built in the castle courtyard in 1754. It was decorated with ornaments and the builder's coat of arms. The fountain stick wore two face masks and dolphin sculptures as water dispensers. At the moment it is also under restoration.

Some historical farm buildings in the castle courtyard were demolished in the 1990s due to disrepair, as was the rear castle north of the castle courtyard .
