When underflow of the water flow is at dams and structures in the dike line through cavities or water conducting soil layers , respectively. The shortness (laterally also: circumference) endangers the stability of the building through increasing erosion up to complete destruction. This is counteracted by lengthening the path that the seepage water has to cover from one side of the structure to the other. This increases the seepage resistance. This is achieved with the help of sealing curtains , sheet pile walls or diaphragm walls below and / or to the side of the structure. Sealing curtains are injected into the bedrock and the valley flanks by injecting sealing agents ; hearth walls and sheet piling are used for weirs .
