Uppingaburg

The Uppingaburg (also Bawinghesburg or Thedingaburg or Thesingburg ) is an abandoned high medieval castle in the municipality of Bawinghesburg or Thedingaburg or Thesingburg ( joint municipality Jümme ) in the district of Leer in Lower Saxony . Since 1780 a manor house with moats has stood in its place , which is privately owned and is a listed building.

Building description

The Uppingaburg is a mansion in the transitional style of the classicist baroque . It stands a little off the road and is partially surrounded by the remains of a graft. The baroque open staircase in front of the house, elaborately made of sandstone, is probably older than the building itself. It may come from the demolished Evenburg in Leer . The outer wall is divided by pilaster strips . The double-leaf front door with skylights and sidelights has a classicist version.

history

The castle is first mentioned in 1439 as Bawinghesburg . The name of the facility may go back to a former owner named Ubbo Hebben. From 1654 a Hans Caspar von Coeberer was the owner of the facility. With Christoph Wilhelm von Coeberer, this family died out in the male line in the 18th century . His daughter handed over the estate in 1752 to a relative of her husband, the then ten-year-old Johann Vollrath Kettler (born 1742, died 1784). He, meanwhile appointed as an engineer lieutenant, had the castle demolished in 1780 and the present mansion built, partially incorporating the old foundation walls. Later, the Rindels family from Nortmoor bought the property at auction, which in the 19th century passed to the Thedinga family through marriage. The complex is also called Thedingaburg or Thesingburg after her .
