The Bridge from the South (2008)

The Ura e Kordhocës ( Albanian for Bridge of Kordhoca ) is a stone arch bridge north of the small town of Kordhoca in Albania and about two kilometers south of Gjirokastra . It spans the Drinos at about 200 meters above sea level and is one of the most important structures in the region from the Ottoman period .

The bridge was built in the 19th century. It represented the most important connection between the city of Gjirokastra and other places on the mountain slope of Mali i Gjerë to the agriculturally important Dropull plain on the other side of the river and to the small town of Libohova .

The structure is around 103 meters long and 3.7 meters wide. It has five arches and four pillars. An arched window is built into each pillar. The arches are nine to eleven meters wide. The reasonably level bridge crosses the river seven meters above the usual water level. The bridge was built from rather small blocks of gray limestone with a rough surface.

The Ura e Kordhocës was in the 1970s and 80s location of the three films Muri i Gjallë , Dasma e Sakos and Yes Liri Yes Vdekje the Albanian cinema studios Shqipëria e Re .
