Urban & Schwarzenberg was a German medical specialist publisher based in Munich .

history

Urban & Schwarzenberg is founded as a travel and mail order bookstore in Vienna in 1866. In 1876 the publishing rights of the “Wiener Medizinische Presse” were taken over, whereby the medical sector moved into the focus of the company. In 1898 a second branch is founded in Berlin, which soon becomes the headquarters of the publishing house. In 1901 the specialist medical bookshop Oscar Rothacker is taken over. 1945 the takeover of the medical program of the publishing house JF Lehmann and with it also of the world famous anatomy atlas ' Sobotta ' takes place . In 1949 the headquarters of the publishing house was relocated to Munich. In 1968 Urban & Schwarzenberg founded the Munich Publishing Service with 3 other Munich publishers. 1995 mediscript Verlag is taken over. In 1996 the imprint publishing house AESCURA was founded. In 1998 Urban & Schwarzenberg is taken over by the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group . Shortly afterwards (1999) the merger with the publisher Gustav Fischer, which meanwhile also belongs to Holtzbrinck, takes place, the merged company is now called Urban & Fischer . In 2003 the Holtzbrinck publishing group sold Urban & Fischer Verlag to the Dutch science publisher Elsevier , which now markets the books from Urban & Fischer Verlag under the Elsevier brand.
