Urgull

The Urgull is a mountain in the city of San Sebastián in the Spanish Basque Country . It is largely forested and forms the end of a headland between La Concha Bay in the west and the mouth of the Urumea River in the east. In the north it drops directly into the Bay of Biscay , while the port and old town are connected to its southern slope. Due to its location and the 12.5 meter high statue of Christ erected on its summit, it dominates the cityscape.

Due to its strategic importance, a castle was built on the mountain in the 12th century , which was destroyed and rebuilt several times and adapted to military requirements . Today it is known as the Castillo de la Mota . In 1924, a military cemetery was inaugurated on the north slope of the mountain for the British soldiers who fell in the battle for the fortress during the Napoleonic Wars in 1813 . The Urgull is now a popular destination.
