Uriel Jones

Uriel Jones (born June 13, 1934 - March 24, 2009 in Dearborn , Michigan ) was an American musician. In the 1960s and 1970s he was a drummer for The Funk Brothers .

Life

Jones was originally hired by Motown to replace drummer Benny Benjamin and took over his position with Richard Allen when Benjamin's health deteriorated. Jones' drumming was shaped by his sound, which came across mainly in songs like Ain't No Mountain High Enough or I Heard It Through the Grapevine . For Motown, Jones used equipment from companies like Ludwig , Slingerland and Gretsch . Jones became known to a larger number of people through the documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown .

He died of complications from a heart attack at Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn, aged 74 .
