Semester on leave

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The vacation semester is a six-month break from studying, which students at universities can apply for. The student remains enrolled , but may not be allowed to take part in regular teaching or examinations depending on the study or examination regulations. Frequent reasons for a semester on leave are internships , stays abroad, the need for more paid work , pregnancy or illness.

In many study regulations it is possible to write mock exams and repeat exams during the semester on leave; However, initial tests are not permitted. The student can apply for unemployment benefit during this time if he is available to the labor market during this time.

Another possible advantage of the vacation semester for students is that it is not counted as a subject semester and is therefore not counted towards the duration of the study .

A possible financial disadvantage can also arise if the students normally work as working students : In the case of a semester on leave, this type of employment and the associated possible advantages over a mini job are not possible.
