Urs festival in Ajmer

The Urs festival takes place annually on the anniversary of the death of the Sufi saint Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti in Ajmer , a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan . It is most grave Shrine ( Dargah Sharif of the founder of) Chishtiyya - Sufi celebrated. The term 'urs ("holy wedding") refers to the mystical union with God (for similar festivals, see Maulid an-Nabī ). The festival is celebrated in the seventh month of the Islamic lunar calendar , it extends over six days and dhikr (zikr) are sung by special singers, the qawwalis , throughout the nights . The festival is celebrated by thousands of pilgrims visiting the shrine from all over India and abroad, particularly Pakistan . The highlight of the festival is the 6th day “Chhati Sharif”, which is celebrated on the 6th Rajab .

The Urs festival in Ajmer is attended by more than 400,000 believers every year. In 2013 the 801st festival took place.
