Ursula Burns
Ursula M. Burns (born September 20, 1958 in Panama City ) is an American manager. She was the first African American woman to head an S&P 100 company and the first woman to replace another woman to head an S&P 100 company. The Forbes magazine put it in 2009 and 2010 respectively on the list of 100 most powerful women in the world .
Life
Ursula Burns studied mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University and at Columbia University . She completed an internship at Xerox in 1980 and was taken on the following year after completing her studies. In 1991 she became assistant to the then CEO Paul Allaire and in the years that followed she managed various areas of the company. She worked closely with Anne Mulcahy , who was CEO of Xerox from 2001. In July 2009, Burns took over from Mulcahy as CEO, and in May 2010 she also took over the position of Chairwoman.
In May 2016, Xerox announced that after the planned split of the company into a technology and a service company, Burns would be relinquishing the post of CEO and only remaining chairwoman of the technology company. In 2017 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In the same year, she also resigned as Chairwoman of the Xerox Corporation.
Since 2017 she has been chairman of the Dutch-Bermuda telecommunications group Veon .
Ursula Burns is married and has two children.
