Uson (volcano)
The Uson ( Russian Узон ) is a volcano on Kamchatka that was completely destroyed in an eruption about 40,000 years ago.
Today there is only one caldera left . It has a diameter between 9 and 12 km. It is a destination for adventure travelers because of its hot springs and mud pots , rivers and clear, fish-rich lakes, as well as the tundra and the birch forest. The caldera is part of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve . In the caldera is the almost circular Dalneje Lake , a maar with a diameter of about 900 m and a small, centrally located island.
A mineral , uzonite (an arsenic-sulfur compound), is named after the site.
