The Kronotsky Nature Reserve , also Kronotsky Biosphere Zapovednik , is located on the Kamchatka Peninsula in northeastern Russia . It is located on the east coast of the peninsula and covers an area of 11,421 square kilometers.
The area has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1984 and, together with other protected areas, has been part of the "Volcanoes of Kamchatka" World Heritage since 1996 .
About 600 brown bears live in the reserve , which are among the largest representatives of the species and weigh up to 700 kg. In addition, the reserve is home to the largest known population of the giant sea eagle . Other noticeable species are reindeer, snow sheep , wolves, lynxes and arctic foxes. Every spring, the Steller sea lions , which winter on the coast of Japan, migrate to the rocky cliffs of the reserve.
In the protected area are the valley of the geysers and several volcanoes , of which the Kronotskaya Sopka is the largest, reaching a height of 3,528 meters. The caldera of Uson and the largest freshwater lake in Kamchatka, the Kronozkoje Lake , located in the territory of the reserve.
