The Ussangoda National Park is the newest and the 21st National Park in Sri Lanka . The goals of the establishment of the new national park are the long-term protection of the biological, archaeological and geographical values of the area. The park borders the Kalametiya Wildlife Sanctuary to the east.

history

In Hindu mythology, Ussangoda is considered the place where King Ravana lands his peacock chariot (Dandu Monara).

Flora and fauna

Ussangoda is an important breeding site for sea turtles and includes both land and marine areas. The red earth forms the bottom of the area and the stunted vegetation is a feature caused by the strong sea breezes. One theory that explains the red soil is a high concentration of iron oxide in the area. Another theory is that of a meteorite impact . The area was originally intended to be designated as a geopark. However, due to the biodiversity of the area and other important features such as archaeological and geographical values, Ussangoda was declared a national park.
