Ustad Ali Maryam (also Ostād Ali Maryam ; * in Kashan ; † after 1863) was an Iranian architect of the 19th century. He became famous for his designs in the city of Kashan. Three buildings in particular gained greater prominence: the Tabatabayi town house (1840s), the Borudscherdi town house (1857) and the Tīmcheh Amin-o-Dowleh bazaar (1863), the first two of which have been a museum since 1974.

Already at the age of ten, the later Ostād Ali Maryam is said to have followed the construction of the Āghā-Bozorg mosque in Kashan with interest until he was accepted as an apprentice by the architect. Here he learned to use the building material available to him - simple earth - as best as possible. He later developed an architectural style typical of 19th century Kashan that incorporated traditional elements such as stucco work .

The Borujerdi community center was commissioned by Haji Seyyed Hassan Natanzi (called Borujerdi), a rich carpet dealer, for his bride and built by 150 craftsmen. The interior design was carried out by artists from the court such as Sani ol-Molk or Kamāl-ol Molk , who decorated the entrance area with murals of the Qajar kings. The "Tālār" (hall) at the southern end of the house is covered by Rasmi-bandi - and Yazdi-bandi - dome elements with different light openings. Wind towers with a total height of 40 meters ensure that the rooms in the basement are cooled. The construction of the community center took a total of 18 years.

Tabatabayi town house

The Tabatabayi House is another Kashan town house with its typical elements. The outer part consists of four inner courtyards. Numerous wall paintings and artful stained glass windows adorn the interior. The outer part reserved for men is called Biruni and the inner part intended for women is called Andaruni .

Tīmcheh-Amin-o-Dowleh

The Tīmcheh-Amin-o-Dowleh , located in the Kashan Bazaar, is characterized above all by its elaborate muqarnas . The openings in the dome regulate the incidence of light and ensure ventilation of the interior. The dome was commissioned by a wealthy Kashan citizen with strong ties to the Qajar royal family.
