Ute Berns is a German English student.

Life

In 1984 she obtained a Bachelor of Arts , Philosophy and English Literature from Reading University . In 1988 she passed the master’s examination at the Free University of Berlin , English Studies / Philosophy. From 1988 to 1989 she was a postgraduate associate student at the University of London, Queen Mary College . After receiving her doctorate in 1995 from the Free University of Berlin , she was a research assistant at the Institute for English and American Studies at the TU Berlin from 1995 to 2003 . After completing her habilitation in 2007 at the Free University of Berlin, she worked from 2004 to 2008 as a research assistant in the collaborative research center “Cultures of the Performative” at the Free University of Berlin. From 2008 to 2009 she was a professor for modern English and American literatures at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . From 2009 to 2010 she was a professor for English literature at the University of Hamburg . Since 2011 she has held the professorship for English literature at the University of Hamburg .

Her focus is on British literature and culture of the 19th and 20th centuries, literature and culture of the Romantic period, literary and cultural theory and subject construction in the early modern period.
