Uvais Mohamed Imitiyas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Uvais Mohamed Imitiyas was Mayor of Colombo , Sri Lanka from 2006 to 2010 .

Imitiyas came to office by an administrative-political accident. By profession an auto rickshaw driver from poor backgrounds, he applied for the office of mayor as an independent . As such, he had no chance of winning. However, because the United National Party (UNP), one of the largest parties in the country, had elected a minor , their list was not approved and the UNP could not have participated in the elections .

In order to still win the votes of the traditional UNP electorate, an agreement was reached that the eligible UNP candidates would be included in Imitiyas' list and that he would resign from office after the election. The UNP under Siriseena Cooray so led campaign for Imitiyas' list, which then won the elections. To the annoyance of the UNP, however, Imitiyas refused to follow the agreement after the election and remained in office.
