Vímara Peres (Spanish variant of the name: Vímara Pérez ; * around 820, † 873 ) was a Galician warlord of noble descent.

He was in the service of the Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula. As a vassal of King Alfonso III. of Asturias he was commissioned to recapture areas in the Duero Valley from the Moors , who had conquered Visigoth Hispania in the 8th century.

With the support of knights from the region, Vímara became one of the main people responsible for the repopulation ( repoblación ) of the areas between the Duero and Minho rivers . After conquering the city of Porto in the meantime , he founded the first Portuguese county with dynastic succession in 868 , which lasted until 1070 when the last count from the dynasty of Vimara Peres, Nuno Mendes , joined the troops of King García II. of Galicia was defeated.

Vímara built a small castle near Braga , which was named Vimaranis (later by phonetic development: Guimarães ). He was the first count of the county of Portucale , which became the nucleus of what would later become Portugal. It was there that he died in 873.

His successor as Count of Portus Cale ( Portugal ) was his son Lucídio Vimaranes .
