The Völkermarkt reservoir is located in southern Carinthia and is around 21 km long and up to 1.5 km wide. The third largest body of water in Carinthia was created in 1961 after three years of construction through the damming of the Drava in the middle of a charming landscape. In addition to energy generation at the Edling power station , the lake is important for rowing and anglers ( bream region ). Two boat harbors allow access to the reservoir with electric and motor boats. At 24 meters, the lake is deepest at the Devil's Islands, with an average depth of only 3 to 5 meters. Swimming is not very popular due to the slow flow of the Drava. Even in July, the lake barely reaches 18 degrees Celsius. In addition, the water is not very clear due to a lot of suspended matter. Ice skating is also hardly possible due to the constant flow due to the lack of a stable ice cover and is prohibited by the authorities.
