V1500 Cygni is a double system in the constellation Swan consisting of a star and a white dwarf in a close orbit, which is classified as the AM Herculis system .
The system appeared in late August 1975 as Nova Cygni 1975 , a nova visible to the naked eye that reached a maximum brightness of 2.2 mag . This made it one of the brightest and fastest novas observed in the 20th century . In 1995 the visual brightness had dropped to approx. 18 mag. V1500 Cygni was the first nova that could be assigned to the strongly magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs) of the type AM Herculis (Polar). It has been proven that the coupling between the rotation period of the white dwarf and the orbit period due to the nova eruption, which is characteristic in these systems, is broken. The period of rotation of the white dwarf is currently 3.5 minutes shorter than the orbit period of the binary star of 201 minutes, but is synchronized with the orbit period on a time scale of approx. 150 years. V1500 Cygni is one of the four known asynchronous AM Herculis stars (next to BY Cam, V1432 Aql and CD Ind).
