The VARIG flight 265 (flight number RG265 ) was a domestic flight of the airline VARIG from Marabá airport to airport Carajás . On February 14, 1997, a Boeing 737-2C3 with the aircraft registration number PP-CJO had an accident on this flight , when the right main landing gear broke during landing, the machine came off the runway and slid into a forest. The first officer was killed in the accident and six people were injured.

The machine was finally assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton , Washington, and completed its maiden flight on January 10, 1975, before being delivered to Serviços Aéreos Cruzeiro do Sul on January 31, 1975 . The aircraft had the factory number 21013, it was the 393rd Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration PP-CJO . After VARIG bought the airline Cruzeiro, the machine passed to its new owner on January 1, 1993. The twin- engined , narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-17A engines.

The four-person cabin crew consisted of flight attendants Mauro Pantoja and Gilton Carvalho and flight attendants Claudia Nicolela and Claudia Regina Araujo.

The flight from Belém to Marabá as well as the stopover in Marabá went without any special incidents. At 11:55 a.m. the machine took off for its onward flight to Carajás , where it was approaching around 12:30 p.m. The pilots received clearance to land on runway 10 at Carajás Airport. When we landed, the weather conditions were difficult, there was a thunderstorm and visibility was poor. When the pilots landed the aircraft on the rain-soaked runway at 12:34 p.m. local time, the right main landing gear broke and buckled backwards. 700 meters after first touching down, the machine slid to the right of the runway into a sloping forest 50 meters from the roadway and then down the slope through the branches.

Rescue operation

After the accident, flight operations were interrupted for an hour. Initially, all occupants of the machine could be rescued alive. However, first officer José Aparecido de Oliveira died in hospital from his injuries. The captain Cairo Santos and five passengers were injured. The injured were treated at Yutaka Takeda Hospital.
