The VASP Flight 234 (flight number VP234 ) was a domestic flight of the airline Viação Aérea São Paulo from São Paulo-Congonhas to Airport Brasília . On May 25, 1982, a Boeing 737-2A1 with the aircraft registration number PP-SMY suffered an aircraft accident on this flight , when the captain put the machine down incorrectly due to an optical illusion , with the machine breaking away from the runway. Two passengers were killed in the accident.

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-2A1, which was 7 years and 8 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton , Washington state , and made its maiden flight on September 24, 1974, before being delivered to Viação Aérea São Paulo in October of the same year. The aircraft had the factory number 20970, it was the 376th Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration PP-SMY . The twin- engined , narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-7 engines.

There were 118 people on board the machine, including 112 passengers and 6 crew members.

the accident

The flight from São Paulo to Brasília initially went smoothly. The landing in Brasília was carried out at 11:40 p.m. during heavy rainfall. The aircraft touched down with the nose landing gear first on landing. This then collapsed under the load. The machine came off the runway and broke into two pieces at row 12. Most people were harmed there. Two passengers were killed, 17 people were injured.

Cause of accident

It was found that the master had previously operated the system for spraying the cockpit window with a rain repellent liquid. The incorrect use of the agent resulted in an optical illusion in the rain, as a result of which the master first touched down the engine with the bow instead of the main landing gear, as intended.

It was also announced that the captain had seen a doctor shortly before the flight and had complained of ongoing health problems. However, he claimed he was still fit for work and stated that he had to take the flight to Brasília. Other VASP pilots complained that they were exposed to high work pressure on the part of the airline and gave the responsibility for the tense working atmosphere to the vice-president of the state airline, Alex Barroso, who was also the commander of the Brazilian Air Force.

The aviation authority stated that the meteorological conditions at the time of the accident were above the required minimum.
