VS-PLUS is a control method for road crossings that are regulated with a traffic light system. The signal generators are connected to a control unit on which VS-PLUS also runs as software.

The software is best suited for traffic-dependent control of the traffic light system. For this purpose, in addition to signal transmitters, a number of detectors are connected to the control unit, which are typically scanned 10 times per second. It is also suitable for junctions with additional local public transport privileges .

An essential feature of the software is that the regulation of a specific node does not have to be programmed, but parameterized. The parameterization requires an abstraction of the control tasks using traffic engineering models. This makes it possible to put terms such as "priority" in numbers and thus use them as parameters.

The parameterization also enables the software to be subordinate to a higher-level control and thus to be used in green waves and other coordinated areas.

Before commissioning, the traffic flow can be simulated on a PC. For this purpose, the software is loaded into a control unit emulator, which communicates with a simulator. The simulation reproduces the traffic microscopically ( microsimulation ).
